About James Culver

Dr. Culver completed his undergraduate education at Duke University, followed by medical school and residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  After training, he spent 22 years in private practice in Charlottesville, Virginia. He and his wife, Claire, first discovered Maine on a camping trip in Acadia with their two children. Many years later, he and his wife purchased a camp in Gouldsboro. They soon came to appreciate all that the Down East region has to offer. When Dr. Culver then realized there was an opportunity to work for Northern Light at Maine Coast Hospital, they decided to make their camp a home. He first joined Norther Light in a part-time capacity as he gradually retired from his private practice in Virginia, and, when he and Claire survived their first winter in Maine, they decided to make the move permanent.  They feel so fortunate to have found such a welcoming community.

Dr. Culver was drawn to his work as an OB/GYN by the opportunity it provides to care for women across many stages of life, from their first gynecologic visit, through pregnancy and childbirth, and into the years beyond.  Building long-term relationships with his patients is one of the most meaningful aspects of his work.  He is compassionate and thorough as he works with his patients to help them navigate the health challenges they encounter. When surgery is necessary, he emphasizes minimally invasive procedures, including hysteroscopy and laparoscopy.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Culver enjoys spending time with his family as they explore all that Maine has to offer, including hiking, sailing, and walking their pack of three rescue dogs.  He is also an avid do it yourself home improvement enthusiast and enjoys working on projects around the house and in the yard.  Dr. Culver feels very fortunate to live and work in Maine and looks forward to caring for women in this community for years to come.
