About James Kuhn

Dr. James Kuhn, MD became an orthopedic surgeon to serve the patient and alleviate pain and disability in the safest and least impactful and way possible. He believes communication with patients is critical. It begins with the patient, being frank and clear when explaining their diagnosis and their options, including the risks and benefits of any approach, the chances of good and not good outcomes, and inviting questions and answering them in plain language. He believes in educating his patients so they can decide for themselves  the best way forward. He graduated Hamilton College in 1987, and SUNY Buffalo medical school in 1992, where he finished second in his class. He has won numerous academic awards, including membership in AOA and graduating summa cum laude. His surgical internship was at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, then an ortho residency at George Washington University, followed by a fellowship in limb lengthening and deformity correction at the University of Maryland. At the end of his training he moved to Maine in 1998 and practices with Maine Ortho at Spectrum. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons and is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Dr. Kuhn has held various and numerous administrative and executive positions, including the original chair of the Southern Maine Orthopedic Management Company, now vice chair, and chair of several committees over time. He was the at large member, then treasurer of the Medical Executive Committee of MMC, and a current member of the Physician Leadership Council of Spectrum Orthopedics. His medical practice expertise has evolved from 22 years of general orthopaedics to Level I trauma call, treating all kinds of musculoskeletal trauma, including high energy severe injuries. Dr. Kuhn now performs joint replacement, sports medicine, hand surgery, pediatric orthopaedics, and foot and ankle surgery.  Dr. Kuhn specializes in direct anterior hip replacements. He has lived in Falmouth for 15+ years, with his wife of 28 years, Amy. They have 3 children, Natalie (25, a 3rd year medical student at Tufts), Bryce (23, works in the aquaculture industry), and Maria (20, a sophomore at Columbia University). He grew up near Buffalo NY, and remains a steadfast, and therefore resilient, Bills and Sabres fan. He enjoy skiing, fishing in both fresh and saltwater, hiking, traveling, boating in Casco Bay, gardening, landscaping, and painting.
